Data Management

Planning Backups and Recovery

A backup plan should define what to protect, how long to retain it and how to restore the service.

Classify the data

Separate databases, business files, configuration and logs. Identify how often each changes and how important it is to the service. Use business requirements to set backup frequency, retention periods and recovery objectives.

Document copies and access

Record storage locations, permitted accounts and encryption methods. Plan independent copies for important data, and confirm capacity, transfer usage and version retention so resource constraints do not silently undermine backup jobs.

Test restoration

Creating a backup file does not demonstrate a working recovery process. Test file access, database restoration and application startup in a suitable environment. Record timings and procedures, then update the plan as the business changes.
