Networking Basics

Bandwidth and Data Transfer Explained

Understand port speeds and transfer allowances when planning websites, downloads and business connections.

3CTIME KNOWLEDGE BASE · 2026-10-27

Bandwidth describes a rate

Bandwidth is commonly expressed in Mbps or Gbps and describes a connection rate specification. Actual transfers also depend on sharing arrangements, network conditions, destination networks and application performance. Compare port details, sharing conditions and test destinations together.

Transfer describes accumulated usage

Transfer allowances are commonly expressed in GB or TB over a billing period. Confirm how inbound and outbound traffic are counted, when allowances reset and what happens when an allowance is exceeded.

Describe your usage pattern

File distribution depends on sustained transfers and total volume, while interactive applications also need attention to latency and stability. Provide target regions, active hours, file sizes and expected user numbers when requesting a networking proposal.
